Making the rounds in the news lately is the fact that two major diseases are getting closer to their demise. Cancer and AIDS. In the cancer story, four of 38 patients with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma have seen the disease disappear following treatment, while five others saw reductions of 50 per cent in their tumours. Think about that…four are cancer free! Sure the number could be higher but we are just starting to figure this out and besides, this is done by injection. Not painful chemo or some other massively life altering treatment. I know personally, in my life, cancer has taken a few of my family members and to know that we are beginning to understand how to fight is an amazing idea.
On the AIDS side, there is a woman who was infected with the disease by her husband at least 10 years ago has never shown any signs of the disease. She is what is called an “elite suppressor” and studying her immune cells will give a very important and rare look at what can be done to fend off the disease. They say that this could be used to fight it and not prevent it but regardless, we are getting a leg up on another major killer of human lives. The future is looking good, very good.
